McDowell off to solid start

Graeme McDowell immediately edged closer to overnight leader Adam Scott as The Open Championship final round began at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

While McDowell pulled his first shot of the day left at the par three opener – the only one on The Open rotation – Scott looked to have hit his tee shot perfectly.

However, on greens firming up in windy conditions, the Australians ball rolled through the back of the green.

Northern Ireland’s McDowell was able to get up and down for par, but Scott missed his five footer for par and dropped to ten under.

McDowell and American Brandt Snedeker were three behind, one ahead of Tiger Woods – the former World Number One producing a brilliant par save of his own from a greenside bunker at the second.
