After five straight defeats across his appearances at Hazeltine in 2016 and Whistling Straits in 2021, the Englishman created some happy memories at the biennial match play contest.

On a memorable opening day at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Englishman teamed up with Rory McIlroy to win 5&3 against Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele in the anchor match of the afternoon four-balls.

It helped the hosts open up a commanding five-point lead – the joint-highest on the opening day of the event – for Europe over the holders at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

Europe had earlier won the morning foursomes 4-0 in a dominant display as Europe look to maintain their 30-year unbeaten home record.

"It’s one of the greatest days I’ve ever had on a golf course," Fitzpatrick said.

"It was very, very special from the moment I knew I was partnering this man, and with the start we got off to I couldn’t be happier. It is so different playing at home having those fans cheering."

Fitzpatrick spoke earlier in the week about belonging more on the Ryder Cup stage ahead of the 44th edition, having claimed his first Major Championship at last year’s U.S. Open.

This was the first time the 29-year-old had been selected to play in four-balls – something he had long wanted –and he showcased his class with a remarkable display.

He made four birdies and a superb eagle in five of the opening six holes, with World Number Two McIlroy admitting he could only watch on and applaud.

"For the first nine holes I was trying to hang on to his coat tails,” the four-time Major winner said.

"They made a few birdies then and we had to hang in there but just a great day in front of some amazing fans."

Saturday’s foursomes session begins from 7:30AM local time on Saturday, with Europe looking to move closer to the 14 ½ points they require to regain the trophy.
