Mason targets more PGA Seniors success

Record-breaking Carl Mason has confirmed he will be among the stars of the European Senior Tour teeing up in this summer’s ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship at De Vere Mottram Hall.

Mason, the most prolific winner in Senior Tour history with 25 victories, heads to the Cheshire venue determined to win the championship for a fourth time.

The 59-year-old Buxton-born professional claimed the prestigious title in 2004, 2007 and 2009 and is looking for a return to winning ways after seeing his record of a Tour win every year since 2003 come to an end in 2012.

“I always look forward to competing in the PGA Seniors Championship,” said Mason.

“I am proud to have won it three times as it is the oldest championship on the tour and one everyone wants to win.

“I would love to win it for a fourth time and I will be more determined than ever having seen my run of a Tour win every year since joining the Tour come to an end last year.

“The competition is getting tougher with a lot of younger guys coming through and adding that extra quality to the field.”

A fourth win for the three-time Order of Merit winner would elevate him alongside the legendary Neil Coles.  Christy O’Connor snr holds the record with six victories.

Among those expected to be competing for the title are past Ryder Cup captains Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance and Mark James. The defending champion is Paul Wesselingh, who won the Rookie of the Year award in 2012.

The tournament, which carries an increased prize fund of £260,000, is the first European event of the year on the schedule, taking place at De Vere Mottram Hall for the first time from June 6-9.

It is the longest running Senior event, having first being competed for in 1957 and is the only 72-hole championship outside of the Senior Majors.
