Manassero targeting third title

Matteo Manassero plans to shake off any fatigue from his US Open Championship debut in time for the start of the BMW International Open.

The Italian sensation, a double European Tour winner at 18, finished 54th at Congressional Country Club before jetting from Washington to Munich.

But he believes he will be firing on all cylinders come tee-off on Thursday.

“I'm always glad to come here,” he said. “It's a nice place, I enjoy this week. It comes after a Major, so I try to recover my energies to have a good week here.

“Every week I play in European Tour events, I try my best to win the event, and obviously, hopefully this week will be a good one.”

Rory McIlroy’s stunning performance confirmed the Northern Irishman’s superstar status, and there are many experts who see Manassero as one of his main rivals for years to come.

“It's an honour for me to be recognised as a good player and a possible future Major winner or whatever,” he added. “So I'm glad of it, and you know, I'm really working on to be always as good as I can and always improve.

“I always go out and go out and play for shooting the lowest round I can to see what my improvement, to see a good game from myself. That's why sometimes I take it not very well because I expect a lot from myself.

“I never expect myself to be top 30 in the world after a year and three months right now. I never expected that, so I'm not setting many long-term goals, like five years.

“But if I keep concentrating and keep thinking that the week I'm playing, it's that important, very important for me every week, I'm sure I'll be able to play really well every week and perform well and in five years, maybe be top 20 or top ten in the world.”
