MacIntyre ready for Major experience at Genesis Scottish Open

Robert MacIntyre can’t wait to tee it up in the Genesis Scottish Open this July, as the historic tournament, which he views as the ‘fifth Major’, enters a new era.

Macintyre will tee it up amongst a stellar field when his home open takes place at the Renaissance Club for the fourth consecutive year, with World Number One Scottie Scheffler the most recent star name to confirm his participation in the third Rolex Series event of the 2022 DP World Tour season.

“For me it’s the fifth Major. Outside of the Majors the Genesis Scottish Open is the one, as a Scot, that you want to win. With the standard of the field and everything that comes with it, it would mean absolutely everything,” said the 25 year old.

This season, the Genesis Scottish Open is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR for the first time and boasts a new title sponsor in Genesis, the luxury automotive brand from South Korea, and Macintyre is excited for the future of the tournament.

“I think it’s comfortably in the top ten (global tournaments) and now it’s being staged through the joint alliance between the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR. It sits in a perfect position on the schedule and with Genesis on board and all these big players coming, I don’t think there’s many bigger tournaments.

“The first event I played was big, but now it has more big players and it has definitely elevated it to another level. Scottie has announced he has coming this year and that’s an added bonus for everyone.

“The Renaissance Club has also put in a lot of work and given a lot of support to the tournament. The owner Jerry Sarvadi has worked closely with Padraig Harrington on some changes to the course and the place is looking good”

Macintyre is looking forward to playing in front of a full home crowd once again and believes the Genesis Scottish Open can be an inspiration for youngsters, especially as the tournament, which benefits from the continued commitment of the Scottish Government, managed by VisitScotland, retains its place in the week before The Open.

“I think it’s good for kids to come and see the best players and it can only be good for golf in Scotland. I love playing in Scotland and I’ll always play the Genesis Scottish Open no matter where it is in the season, and with The Open coming up in St Andrews, that’s massive as well.”
