Lundberg charges clear

Sweden's Mikael Lundberg took advantage of perfect scoring conditions to surge into a four shot lead as the second round of the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity began in Austria.

The 40 year old, who has had to regain his card at Qualifying School three years running, held a share of the overnight lead along with England's Adam Gee.

But with no sign of the winds that kept scoring in check on Thursday, the two-time Russian Open winner made four birdies in a row from the third – where he spun his approach back to within a couple of feet – to reach nine under through seven holes.

That put him four clear at Diamond Country Club, which was sparkling in glorious sunshine, with English pair Richard Finch and Lee Slattery leading the chase on five under.

Finch overcame a couple of early bogeys to turn in a one under 35, while Slattery had three gains in his first seven holes.

Gee holed a ten footer at the fourth – his third birdie of the morning – but threw in four bogeys in an outward 37 to slip to four under, alongside Rhys Davies and Sihwan Kim.

Defending champion Joost Luiten made a 15 foot putt at the first for his third birdie of the day and had progressed into the group at three under, with home favourite Bernd Wiesberger among the later starters.

Lundberg, whose last top-ten finish came two years ago, dropped a shot at the eighth after a poor chip, but sunk a long birdie putt at the 12th to repair the damage.

That left him three clear of Kim and Slattery, while Luiten had birdied the fourth and fifth – the latter from distance – to be only four off the pace.
