In form Joost Luiten is taking nothing for granted as he prepares to defend his title at this week's Oman Open.
The Dutchman missed five months of last season with a wrist injury but did not seem to miss a beat upon his return, finishing in the top 30 at the final three Rolex Series events of the season.
He has carried that form into 2019, finishing third in Dubai and sixth in Saudi Arabia before achieving his best ever result at a World Golf Championships with a top ten at last week's WGC-Mexico Championship.
Combine that with his win last season at the inaugural event here at Al Mouj Golf and the six time European Tour winner is hard to look past this week, but Luiten is fully aware of how fickle the golfing gods can be.
"I've been playing great," he said. "Hopefully I can take that form down on the golf course here and do well but it's golf, you never know what you're going to get when you start the week.
"Every week is different, every day is different, every shot is different so I just need to be mentally prepared to go out there and shoot a low score.
"It was my first time here last year and to win it was very special. I think always when you win one you need to go back and defend it and I'm really looking forward to this week to try to defend my title. I'm very excited."
This week's stunning layout sits right on the coast and while the wind is certain to play its part, Luiten believes the course will find other ways to show its teeth.
"I love this place, it's a great golf course," he said. "This year it feels a bit firmer, it feels tougher out there than last year, especially into the greens so that will be very interesting.
"It's all about hitting the greens and not playing too aggressively this week because if you go for pins, you end up making bogeys sometimes. I think it's all about the gameplan, the middle of the green is not bad here."
