Western Australian Jarrod Moseley came from five strokes behind to win his first professional tournament at the Heineken Classic in Perth, Australia.
In an amazing finish at the magnificent Vines Resort in Australia's richest tournament Moseley, who has only been a professional for 18 months, held his nerve for a final round of 69 to post a winning total of 274, 14 under par, one shot ahead of the daunting trio of Ernie Els, Bernhard Langer and Peter Lonard.
Moseley, 26, from Mandurah, south of Perth, did not even know he was playing in the event until ten days before the start.
"I did not come here thinking I had a chance," he said. "I first thought I could win after nine holes when I saw a leaderboard. I was surprised by what happened to Ernie. I thought I was playing for second. When you are that far behind Ernie Els, you assume you are playing for second."
Els appeared destined to win his second European Tour title of the year, following his success in the Alfred Dunhill South African PGA Championship, but he struggled to a 75 in the final round to finish a shot off the pace in a tie for second.
Els played some outstanding golf over the first three days, opening with rounds of 65, 66 and 69 to lead by four shots at the halfway point and three shots from Sweden's Jarmo Sandelin going into the final round. After two holes on the last day he had opened up a six-shot cushion. But the double US Open champion faltered at the 413-yards par-four seventh hole with a triple bogey. After dropping shots on the ninth and 13th he needed to hole a 25-foot eagle putt on the last to force a play-off but his ball slipped past the hole.
For Moseley victory in the joint-sanctioned event earned him his biggest ever cheque of 152,447 euro and a three-year exemption on the European Tour.
