Mikael Lindberg is hoping to strengthen his position at the top of the Road to Mallorca Rankings as he prepares to tee it up at the NMB Championship at Humewood Golf Club this week.
The Swede secured his second Challenge Tour victory at the recent Bain's Whisky Cape Town Open and now sits in pole position on the Rankings ahead of the fourth and final co-sanctioned tournament with the Sunshine Tour in South Africa.
The 31-year-old, who graduated from the Challenge Tour in 2022, struggled for consistency on the DP World Tour and subsequently lost his playing privileges, however he has made the perfect start to regaining them in 2024.
“I’ve always been a slow starter to the season in recent years,” he said. “Last year I struggled throughout the season, so it was fantastic for my confidence to start the year with a victory in Cape Town.
“It was a very big win for me and hopefully I can kick on for the rest of the season and get my DP World Tour card back.”
Humewood Golf Club is South Africa’s only true links golf course and although not his preferred type of golf design, Lindberg is looking forward to the challenge this week.
“The weather back home in Sweden is terrible so to be able to start the season in South Africa is fantastic and I’m very grateful to the Challenge Tour and the Sunshine Tour,” he said.
“I’ve never been a massive fan of links golf because I’m not sure it suits my game. I prefer the soft tree-lined courses but I’m definitely looking forward to the challenge this week.”
Lindberg joins an impressive field in Port Elizabeth this week, which includes DP World Tour winners Darren Fichardt, Hennie Otto, Brandon Stone, Joachim B. Hansen, Ross McGowan, Daniel van Tonder, Rikard Karlberg, Gary Stal and Shaun Norris.
