Levy charges into early lead

France’s Alex Levy made a flying start to his first round in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Playing at Carnoustie, one of the three courses used for the pro-am event, the Volvo China Open winner turned in a five under par 31 to hold an early one shot lead.

That was one ahead of compatriot Raphaël Jacquelin – who was also playing Carnoustie, and playing partners Pete Whiteford and Ryan Evans.

Playing Kingsbarns – where America’s Peter Uihlein was within a whisker of The European Tour’s first 59 last year - Whiteford started on the back nine and birdied his first three holes before picking up another shot on the 14th, while Evans carded a hat-trick of birdies from the 12th.

All four of Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes in the field were playing Carnoustie, with Germany’s former winner Martin Kaymer going best at one under par and World Number One Rory McIlroy one over through six.
