Australian Deyen Lawson carried his weekend form from the Austrian Open into the first round of the Euram Bank Open, taking the early clubhouse leader after a seven under par round of 63.
Lawson ended last week at Diamond Country Club with consecutive rounds of 67 and started at Golf Club Adamstal with a round which included nine birdies, including a run of five in a row on the back nine.
After birdies on the fourth, fifth and ninth holes, the 29-year-old made the turn one under with another gain on the ninth. He then birdied the tenth and moved to seven under par after five consecutive birdies from the 12th hole.
“I felt like I was hitting it alright, I was hitting it steady but made a couple of little errors late on the front nine,” said Lawson. “I stayed positive and took it shot-by-shot. I didn’t realise I’d made that many birdies in a row, after the nine I had six more in seven holes.
“I just tried to hit each shot as good as I can, not worrying about what it was for – for bogey or birdie. The views are great here, so you just have to look around when you’re a bit frustrated and take your mind off golf. These hills take your mind off golf pretty quickly. All in all it’s a good start and a good position after.”
Lawson is two strokes ahead of Santiago Tarrio Ben, who sits in the clubhouse on five under par. Early starter John Catlin, of America, was the first golfer to finish on four under par, joined shortly after by Victor Riu of France and England’s Matt Ford.
