The 34 year old, who won last year’s Austrian Golf Open, had five birdies and an eagle at the long fifth in his first 14 holes.

There were also bogeys at the seventh and 12th, leaving him five under with four to play.

Irish duo Peter Lawrie and Damien McGrane were joined by India’s Jeev Milkha Singh on three under in a tie for second.

And England’s Nick Dougherty - a three-time European Tour winner but yet to make a cut in 20 starts this season - was also showing some improved form.

The 29 year old briefly shared the lead after three birdies on the way out, and despite dropping shots on the second and fifth, he was well placed at one under with two to play.
