Even by Bernhard Langer’s standards, 1993 was a remarkable year.
The highlight, naturally, was his second victory in the Masters Tournament at Augusta National, but there was no mistaking his delight at following up that triumph with a success in the European Tour’s flagship tournament.
Just a matter of weeks after claiming his second Green Jacket by four strokes, Langer returned to Europe and proceeded to destroy a high quality field by a margin of six shots.
Langer described it as “one of my best weeks ever” - and no wonder.
After rounds of 70 and 69, the resolute German was tucked in nicely on the heels of the leaders. However he assumed command with a third round 67 which hoisted him three strokes clear of the field, and a final 68 stretched his advantage to six by the finish.
