Bernhard Langer overcame a shaky start and soggy course conditions to establish a two shot lead on the second day of the Greater Hickory Kia Classic on the US Champions Tour.
Langer, who is second behind American Kenny Perry in the Champions Tour Money List, opened with a brace of bogeys but rallied with six birdies to sign for a four under par round of 66 and a ten under par aggregate total.
“I got off to a really rough start,” the German Major Champion said. “But I settled down and got a nice run of birdies there, and played pretty decent golf for the most part.
“I’ve had lots of opportunities to win since July, but haven’t quite closed the deal,” added Langer, who lost a play-off to American Mark Wiebe in this year’s Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex.
“I think I’m just taking it too seriously, and being too intense. So I’m trying to enjoy the moment, because I’m only going to have a few years left playing professional golf. I’m out there with some great guys on some beautiful golf courses, so let’s have some fun. That’s been my goal this week.”
Langer’s fellow former Senior Open Champion Bruce Vaughan of America is in a tie for fifth place on seven under par, one shot ahead of Senior Tour champion Anders Forsbrand of Sweden and another former winner of the Senior Open Championship, Russ Cochran.
Senior Tour champion David Frost is in a tie for 12th on four under par after signing for a level par round of 69.
