Langer and Montgomerie hit the front

Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie and Steen Tinning formed part of a six-way tie for the lead at the halfway stage of the US Senior PGA Championship.

The three Senior Tour Members were joined by eight-time Major winner Tom Watson, who won this event in 2001 and 2011, Japan’s Kiyoshi Murota and American Bart Bryant on four under par.

Montgomerie made two birdies, two bogeys and an eagle at the long 15th in his round of 69 at Harbor Shores in Michigan.

“Tom had a great finish last week in the Regions Tradition major and Bernhard is always there, so I felt that if I was equal or around them after two days, I would be quite happy,” Montgomerie said. “I was and I am, and it gives me an opportunity to go forward at the weekend.”

Langer went one better with a round of 68, but the German preached caution as he went in search of his third Senior Major.

“On this golf course you never know what’s going to happen,” Langer said. “There are some low scores out there, but there are also some high numbers. So it was good to get in the red numbers right away and I felt good about my game starting off.”

Tinning’s five under par, bogey-free 66 was the pick of the three second rounds, the Dane carding five birdies.

South African David Frost moved to one under for the week with a two under par round, with Swede Anders Forsbrand England’s Gary Wolstenholme level par.

Roger Chapman, the runaway winner in 2012 at Harbor Shores, was one over par after rounds of 71 and 72.
