Lane takes early lead at Woburn

Barry Lane took an early outright lead ahead of Sam Torrance in the second round of the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters at Woburn Golf Club.

Lane and Torrance held a joint overnight lead after shooting two 67s in the first round but Lane, the winner of the Cleveland Golf /Srixon Scottish Senior Open two weeks ago, skipped ahead of his Scottish playing partner thanks to birdie on the fifth hole.

That followed back to back birdies on the opening two holes and a bogey on the third.

Torrance, meanwhile, was a lot steadier as he opened with a birdie at the first before five successive pars to leave him one under for the day and six under for the tournament, a shot behind Lane.

Chris Williams was one of the biggest movers of the morning after he reached the turn at three under thanks to birdies on the first, fourth, fifth and ninth holes and a bogey on the eighth before gaining another shot at the 11th.

That left the South African, who won his maiden Senior Tour title at the Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by the Stableford Forum last March, just four shots off the lead on four under for the day and three under for the tournament.

Another former Ryder Cup Captain also joined the chasing pack as Mark James had three birdies in the opening five holes and a bogey on the seventh to go two under for the day, just three shots behind the leaders on four under for the tournament.
