KPMG Trophy a big boost for Belgium

Belgium’s national Open has been given a huge boost with the arrival of new title sponsors KPMG for 2015 edition, being played this week at Golf de Pierpont.

The global leaders in professional services signed a one year deal to support the Challenge Tour’s only event in Belgium, bringing the considerable expertise and financial help required to stage a golf tournament at this level.

Last year the Belgian Challenge Open took place without a title sponsor, at Cleydael Golf and Country Club, and KPMG’s input has lifted the event to another level – not only providing the Challenge Tour’s top players with a high quality tournament, but giving up-and-coming young Belgians the chance to test their game at a better level.

KPMG is heavily involved in golf, sponsoring five-time Major winner Phil Mickelson and LPGA Tour professional Stacy Lewis at the elite end of the game, and committing to promoting golf at grass-roots level, too.

Oliver Macǫ, a Partner at KPMG, said: “There is a global trend at KPMG to support golf, but the initiative here in Belgium is an initiative of the Belgian firm. It’s perfectly in line with sponsoring we do of certain PGA championships and also in line with the support of key players on an international level, such as Phil Mickelson and Stacy Lewis.

“We believe that the sport of golf is in line with the values of KPMG. The key objective for us is to contribute to the further development of golf in Belgium and particularly to promote access to a platform of competition to the young talented golfers in Belgium.

“There are a lot of good Belgian golfers and we are sincerely hope that this platform will offer them the opportunity to grow further and to progress in their career. We have Pierre Relecom, Hugues Joannes and Kevin Hesbois and many others, and for us it’s really important that they can benefit from this addition to move further in their career.”

Christian Moyson, General Secretary for the Royal Belgium Golf Association, added: “It’s tremendous that we have such as big name like KPMG as sponsor for this tournament.”
