Koepka joins Bellerive lead

Brooks Koepka moved into a share of the lead as the third round of the US PGA Championship got under way at Bellerive Country Club.

The two-time defending US Open champion equalled the lowest round in tournament history on day two and he was at it again on Saturday, birdieing the first and second to join overnight leader Gary Woodland at ten under after three holes.

Defending champion Justin Thomas was alongside fellow Americans Rickie Fowler and Kevin Kisner at eight under, a shot clear of a charging Tiger Woods, 2015 champion Jason Day, World Number One Dustin Johnson, South African Charl Schwartzel and Belgian Thomas Pieters.

14-time Major champion Woods had the enormous galleries going wild as he holed from 15 and five feet on the first and second to jump within four of the lead but a three-putt on the fifth stalled his momentum.

Thomas was soon within two thanks to a stunning approach to the first and an 11-foot putt on the third that just dropped in the side-door.

Day joined Thomas in birdieing the first and third to get to seven under and Woods was just a shot behind him as he bounced back with an 11-foot birdie on the sixth.

When the final group got under way, Woodland did well to make a par on the first after leaving his second short but Koepka put his approach to tap-in range and was just one back.

An approach to seven feet on the seventh brought Woods a fourth birdie of the day and he was just two back but he would not be there for long.

Koepka hit another brilliant approach into the second to get to ten under and that was good enough to lead on his own as Woodland dropped a shot after putting his second in the water.

Kisner got a tricky lie over the back of the second and he also dropped a shot to fall two behind.

Woodland then hit an excellent tee-shot into the par three third to get back into a share of the lead as Koepka made a par.

Fowler, Johnson, Schwartzel and Pieters were all level par in the early stages of their rounds, with a large group at six under including Open champion Francesco Molinari, Shane Lowry, Pat Perez, Justin Rose, Brandon Stone and Julian Suri.
