The 36 year old Kjeldsen, a three-time winner on The European Tour, started on the back nine at Verdura Golf Resort & Spa and an eagle three at the 14th, allied with two birdies, saw him turn in 32.

He picked up another shot at the short third to reach five under with five to play, but was joined by Haindl when the Qualifying School graduate birdied his first five holes.

They led Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth, Spaniard Jordi Garcia and Swede Joakim Lagergren by one, with Steve Webster and Alvaro Velasco on three under.

Two-time Major winner John Daly was one under through 12 holes, but Italian favourite Matteo Manassero was one over with five to play.
