Khan handed invite to US PGA

BMW PGA Champion Simon Khan is one of three European Tour Members handed last minute invitations to play in next week’s US PGA Championship.

Khan will be joined in the 156-man field for the season’s last Major at Whistling Straits by Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño and Korean Noh Seung-Yul, the 18 year old who won the Maybank Malaysian Open earlier this year.

Khan picked up the biggest cheque of his career when he won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and currently stands 102nd in the World Rankings.

“I thought I was in after I won Wentworth but then a few weeks ago heard I needed to be in the top 100. I was 103rd last week going into the 3 Irish Open and stayed in the same position by finishing 27th so coming here to Akron thought it might only be one week but to get an invite to next week as well is magnificent. These are two fantastic courses to play.

“It’s a far cry from last year where I was having a two-week break. Things have changed massively and this is reward for winning such a big tournament and when you get to these events you realise the benefits of winning such a huge event as the BMW PGA Championship.

“It is hard to draw a line under a good win as you need to look forward. I am excited about being here and plan on playing my own game and enjoying it.”

Ben Curtis and Boo Weekley will also line-up because they played in the 2008 Ryder Cup and remain inside the top 100.

Justin Leonard, another member of the winning United States team two years ago, has fallen to 101 in the world but claimed a place in the field thanks to money earned since last year's US PGA.

Two remaining berths remain vacant for players who win this week's WGC-Bridgestone event or the Turning Stone Resort Championship not already qualified.

The two players currently on the alternate list are American DJ Trahan and Australian Matt Jones.
The defending champion is South Korean YE Yang, the first Asian winner of a major title.
