The key stats behind Hatton's victory

Tyrrell Hatton provided a short game exhibition on his way to a fifth European Tour title at the BMW PGA Championship.

When Tyrrell Hatton spoke after his final round, he was quick to credit a sharp short game as one of the key reasons behind his victory at Wentworth Golf Club.

It was a facet of his game that really stood out throughout the week, and was exemplified by a neat up-and-down for birdie on the final hole to secure a four stroke victory over Victor Perez.

“Although I didn't know that I had a three-shot lead playing the last hole, I was pretty nervous there, and the second shot that we've hit into the last is probably the worst shot in the history of the tournament for the champion,” said Hatton, who led the field in scrambling for the week.

“I'm kind of glad that I followed it up with a nice up-and-down. My short game has been really good all week, and just a nice way to sign off.”

For Hatton, that ‘really good’ translated into sucessfully scrambling 20/24 times, in addition to ranking second for strokes gained around the green, and third for birdies for the week with 22.

Hatton also gained 3.68 shots over the field average from tee to green, where he gained a staggering 11.58 shots through driving accuracy alone. He ranked 11th for that particular stat – an important factor on a golf course that places a premium over finding the fairway, particularly when the ball isn’t travelling as far due to the October conditions.

“I've driven the ball pretty good,” Hatton had said following his second round. “I've not missed too many fairways, which I think is quite key out there.

That accuracy, coupled with his stats around the green, helped him to lead the field in par four scoring with an average of 3.95, and he was second only to Ian Poulter on the par fives, with a scoring average of 4.13.

His putting too was important, ranking 14th in the field on the greens, where he gained 0.95 shots over the field average.
