Kennedy Holds Three Stroke Lead in Madeira

Brad Kennedy of Australia holds a three stroke lead over Steven Jeppesen of Sweden, England’s Jamie Spence and Dane Knud Storgaard at the end of the third day at the Madeira Island Open.

Following the weather disruptions of the first two days, the leaders were only able to complete six holes of the third round before darkness fell. But with a strong wind swirling round the mountains at Santo da Serra, conditions became increasingly difficult as the afternoon wore on.

Kennedy parred the first four holes of the third round before dropping a shot on the fifth, but found himself the new leader as Spence slipped up. Starting the third round one clear of Kennedy at 11 under par, Spence, chasing his third European Tour title, followed a bogey on the first with a double bogey on the second. Another dropped shot on the fourth and a fifth dropped shot of the afternoon on the sixth left him three behind his playing partner on six under par

Dane Knud Storgaard, the third player in the final group, started in similar fashion on the first two holes but steadied the ship with a birdie on the third and parred the next three to finish at six under par. He was joined on that mark moments before play was suspended for the day by rookie Steven Jeppesen, the Swede making hole-in-one on the eighth hole, his penultimate hole for the day, when he holed his nine iron from 149 metres.

The third round will restart at 9.00am local time (8.00 GMT).
