Kaymer takes momentum to Hazeltine

Martin Kaymer believes he is heading to the Ryder Cup in good form after securing a seventh top ten in his last 12 events at the Porsche European Open.

The German has been on the last three consecutive winning European teams and boards the plane to Hazeltine after being handed a Captain's pick by Darren Clarke.

Kaymer spoke on Friday of how he hoped this week's event at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach would be reduced to 54 holes after fog delays and he got his wish with Alexander Levy claiming victory ahead of Ross Fisher after a play-off.

With lengthy weather delays also disrupting last week's Italian Open, it has been a long fortnight for the two-time Major Championship winner but Kaymer believes it has served as good preparation ahead of golf's biggest event.

"It was a long week for me especially after last week but it was a good week," he said.

"It was a good golf course, in amazing shape for the conditions that the golf club had. I was very impressed by the greens, it was really fun and really nice to play. It was really good preparation for next week because I guess the greens probably had a similar speed.

"I've had a lot of top tens the last few months, not quite having a chance late on Sunday afternoon. I'm getting really close, I'm really happy with the way I play golf and the next task coming up is the Ryder Cup and then the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. I'll take it week after week."

Despite going for four wins in a row, some observers are painting Europe as the underdogs for next week's contest and that is exactly how Kaymer likes it.

If they think really badly they are the favourite then I think it's a good position to be in as a European - Martin Kaymer

"If the Americans put themselves as favourites, fair enough," he said. "They are playing on home soil and I think they really are the favourites, at least on paper.

"It can always turn out different ways at the Ryder Cup, we all know that. It can go the American way, it can go the European way, that is why the Ryder Cup is so exciting.

"Match Play, it's a beauty, so if they think really badly they are the favourite then I think it's a good position to be in as a European."
