Martin Kaymer believes he is heading in the right direction ahead of The Ryder Cup at Medinah.
An opening 65 in the KLM Open, which secured a share of second place behind Graeme Storm, provided a welcome boost for the former World Number One.
Kaymer had not played since missing the cut with back to back 79s in last month’s US PGA Championship, a tournament he won two years ago before also triumphing in this event and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Yet after clinching the final automatic slot in Europe’s Ryder Cup Team, the 27 year old was back on song today.
His performance will surely have impressed European Captain José María Olazábal, one of his playing partners together with team-mate Nicolas Colsaerts.
“Today was a good day but I don't want to get ahead of myself as we have three days to go here and three weeks until The Ryder Cup,” said Kaymer.
“The main goal now is to play as good as possible, to hit balls, to work and then deliver at The Ryder Cup.
“I'm not hitting the ball great yet but I am making good progress and that is important.
“Going into the round I didn't know if it would be a 65, like it was, or maybe a 75 because there was not a lot of consistency. But my missed shots today were ok and I also hit a few nice ones.”
Kaymer revealed he had spoken to Olazábal upon completing his round.
The German added: “I think I did well today and afterwards we talked a little and he said 'just keep doing what you are doing, I trust you'.
“I need to keep hitting balls. We are here to work, it is not only fun.
“Obviously you should enjoy it, but I need to work to get ready for The Ryder Cup because I want to be a positive part of it, not making it but just being there.”
