Kaymer gunning for second Whistling Straits title

Martin Kaymer roared into contention to win a second US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits with a stunning third round 65.

The German won his first Major Championship here in 2010 as he beat Bubba Watson in a play-off and was just one shot behind the leading trio of Branden Grace, Matt Jones and Tony Finau.

Kaymer's playing partner Grace holed a bunker shot at the last to fire a 64 and sit alongside Jones, who reached the turn in 35, and Finau who had completed the 11th.

The former World Number One had sat three off the lead but he holed a curling 35 foot putt on the 17th as Jones made a bogey on the ninth after putting his drive into the hospitality pavilions.

Jason Day also took advantage of Jones' predicament with a birdie on the ninth while Justin Rose recovered from a double bogey on the fourth for the second consecutive day to sit 11 under through 11 holes.

Anirban Lahiri was 10 under after 12 holes, one shot clear of  George Coetzee who had played 13.

Brooks Koepka was in the clubhouse at seven under and a shot clear of Charl Schwartzel who was also in the hutch with a 68 alongside Rory McIlroy.

The World Number One began his round nine shots off the lead and saw his birdie putt on the first somehow hang on the edge of the hole without dropping.

But he put his third on the par five second inside six feet and despite missing a birdie chance on the third he picked up another shot on the fourth.

The 26 year old's second shot on the par five fifth found the back of the green and when he drained a 60 foot putt for eagle, he was four under for the day and inside the top ten.

The Northern Irishman then found a greenside bunker on the sixth and dropped a shot before he found sand twice on the eighth to fall further back.

A birdie on the tenth got him rolling again but an over-hit tee shot on the par three 12th resulted in another bogey before he picked the shot back up at the 13th.

Another dropped shot followed on the 15th but he birdied the next and the last to reach six under.

France's Victor Dubuisson impressed with a 67 as he, along with many others, made the best of the rain-softened layout.

Tyrrell Hatton, playing at the year's final Major for the first time, recorded a 68 to also sit at three under as five birdies in his first 14 holes were only blemished by a bogey on the 17th.

"I made a lot of good par putts today which helped to keep the momentum up," he said. "But overall I thought it was a good day and more than anything just happy to be playing the weekend after making my first cut in a Major.

"Obviously I've played four Opens so this was one of my goals to get my World Ranking inside the top 100 to play this event.

"The pressure was off in a way and I think that's the best I've played this week. It's still quite soft out there but firming up as the weeks gone on.

"There's a little bit of breeze picking up on the back nine so it could get a bit tougher for the later starters if it keeps going that way."
