Kaymer confident of successful summer

Martin Kaymer believes he is coming into form at just the right time as he prepares to tee it up at the 100th Open de France this week at Le Golf National.

The German was already a two-time winner on the European Tour but he catapulted himself into public consciousness in 2009 when he won here before following that up with another victory at the Barclays Scottish Open the very next week.

Since then he has gone on to win two Major Championships, a Race to Dubai, three Ryder Cups and spend a spell as the Number One player in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The 31 year old is also coming into some form with three top tens in his last four events, and believes he could be on the verge of something special again.

"I'm fine with the results because I know why things worked out the way they did," he said. "Now, fortunately, I found a good rhythm in my game, and it's just a matter of time that I will be there where I want to be.

"I think it's a good time to peak now. It will help if there are massive tournaments coming up and showing some signs for The Ryder Cup would help as well. Because obviously you can never really rely on a wild card, and I don't want to be relying on that. I would rather play my way into the team.

"But I'm focusing more on the next three weeks. Those are golf courses that I like. Those are golf courses or golf tournaments that I won in the past.

I won this one, I won The Scottish Open; not the Open Championship but I would like to add that one - Martin Kaymer

"So it's very exciting. I'm really, really looking forward to it because I believe I could do well. But you never know if it happens when you really want it. I will try to stay patient and just wait for it and if it happens, it happens.

While Kaymer is striving for a place in the Ryder Cup team for Hazeltine later this year, he may also have one eye on 2018 when the biennial event will be played here at Le Golf National.

Kaymer has fond memories of his 2009 victory in Paris and is now hoping to make some more on a layout that provides a formidable test.

"It's a massive tournament for us on the European Tour. It's a lot to play for this week," he said.

"For me, it has a special meaning because I've won here in the past. The fans have always been very, very kind and very supportive to me.

"I really enjoy playing a challenging golf course. It's not one of those courses where you need to shoot 20 under par. You really need to play good golf and it's not a putting competition.

"Overall, I think it will be a very successful week, especially with that feel that we have this week."
