Karlsson claims dramatic semi-final win

Robert Karlsson edged past David Howell to set up a meeting with Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat in the final of the inaugural Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play.

The former Race to Dubai winner finally beat his former Ryder Cup team mate on the 20th hole in a thrilling semi-final clash, which he led for large spells before a late comeback from Howell took the match into extra holes.

A birdie at the first handed Karlsson an early lead before his English opponent levelled things up by winning the third hole.

Karlsson reached the turn with a two hole lead before a birdie at the short 12th gave him a seemingly decisive three hole lead.

Howell claimed the 13th before holing a sensational long birdie putt at the 16th and taking the 17th to go into the final hole all square.

The Swede then missed from four feet for par to win on the 18th and the match went to extra holes.

Both players made par on the 19th hole and another par on the 20th gave Karlsson victory after Howell failed to get up and down from over the green.

After his win, Karlsson, who had himself birdied the 16th on Saturday to turn the tide in his favour against home favourite Richie Ramsay, said: "I played quite nicely in the beginning, and made a lot of putts; a lot of very important putts, so I am very, very proud of that.

"I did not do much wrong. I hit a couple of iffy putts and then he started to play a bit better.

"That is match play; he did what I did to Ramsay on 16, he did that to me today. Those are the things that happen and you just have to keep going. I am very proud that I went through."

Aphibarnrat, who won the Shenzhen International in April, beat Scotland's Marc Warren 3 and 2 on Sunday to progress.

The 26 year old overcame the disappointment of losing the first hole to claim the second and fourth to go one up.

Aphibarnrat was two up at the turn after taking the eighth, and he extended his lead to three holes with a birdie at the 11th.

"I was happy about the result, but we both did not perform well today," said Aphibarnrat.

"But it was great to win the match and get in the finals."
