Jon Rahm felt his remarkable closing 62 had been a "long time coming" as he finished the 2022 BMW PGA Championship in stunning style at Wentworth Club.
The Spaniard began the day six shots off the lead but carded two eagles, seven birdies and a single bogey on Sunday to finish the tournament in a tie for second alongside Rory McIlroy on 16 under par.
Rahm's closing eagle had seen him walk off the 18th green with a two-shot lead but after spending more than two hours at the summit, he was finally overtaken by champion Shane Lowry as the Irishman birdied the last to win by one.
But Rahm was upbeat after a magnificent day, having covered the back nine in 29 shots on his way to a 62 - matching the lowest totals at Wentworth in both departments, even though he will not co-own the records due to preferred lies.
He said: "Nine under on the last ten, it's very good golf. It's one of those things where everything clicked together.
"I played a really good round of golf, and it was something I felt was a long time coming.
"My game has (been) in a good position for quite a while. I just haven't posted the scores, and this is a very satisfying round getting towards the end of the year.
"Since Mexico (where Rahm won on the PGA TOUR in the spring), I haven't had a chance to win, and posting a good score is something I need, and I'm really happy with that."
After an early fog delay pushed his tee time back by 90 minutes, morning starter Rahm picked up his first birdie of the day at the fourth.
He safely parred the next four holes before reeling off a hat-trick of birdies at the ninth, tenth and 11th to get to ten under.
The Ryder Cup star followed up his birdie run by holing an eagle putt from 13 feet at the 12th before draining his ten-foot putt on the 13th for yet another birdie.
He surrendered a bogey at the 15th but responded in style, rolling in from 25 feet on the 16th for a bounce-back birdie.
Rahm made it back-to-back birdies on the 17th before closing with a slow 21-foot eagle to delight the huge crowds around the 18th green before being denied a fifth Rolex Series title late in the day.
He added: "It's a great day of golf, what can I say. I've been feeling good all week. It's been getting better and better every single day.
"First round, ball-striking wasn't there but my putting saved me.
"Second round, ball-striking was good and my putting wasn't quite there as good as I would have liked.
"And today, starting on the ninth, everything just got fired on all cylinders.
"It's definitely a fun round of golf, where I was really looking forward to it because I've had a long year of having a good round going and just not finishing it off and I think that reaction on the 18th was more for the fact that even with a bogey, I came and persevered at the end."
