Fresh from finishing fourth in the Masters Tournament and capturing his maiden Champions Tour title, Miguel Ángel Jiménez will join the field for the Open de España at PGA Catalunya Resort, near Barcelona, from May 15-18.
One of the great icons of Spanish golf, Jiménez has to date secured 20 career wins on The European Tour and has, among other significant successes, represented Europe in the 2004 and 2010 editions of The Ryder Cup.
The Malaga native, who is affectionately known as ‘The Mechanic’ due to his love of high-performance vehicles like his red Ferrari, will be one of the star attractions in an exciting field of players vying to win Spain’s national Open, which has been previously won by his compatriots Sergio Garcia and Alvaro Quiros, in 2002 and 2010 respectively.
Jiménez has played in every edition of the Open de España since his debut 1983, with his best performance coming in 1999, when he finished joint runner-up alongside his fellow Spaniard Ignacio Garrido and Ireland’s Paul McGinley.
The 50 year old, considered one of the most charismatic golfers on both sides of the pond, currently ranks in third place in the all-time list of most European Tour events played, with 625 appearances.
Last December, Jiménez created history by becoming the oldest player to win a European Tour with his victory at the Hong Kong Open.
