The popular Frenchman will join a host of Staysure Tour stars, including Paul Lawrie and tournament host Ian Woosnam for the inaugural event, which takes place at Cornwall’s stunning Trevose Golf & Country Club from June 21-23.

One of France’s most famous golfers of all time, as well as a two-time European Tour victor and part of The 1999 Ryder Cup, van de Velde is memorable known for his performance at the 1999 Open Championship, where he narrowly missed out on Major Championship glory.

The Frenchman lost in a play-off to Paul Lawrie, after relinquishing his lead on the 72nd hole as he found the Barry Burn at Carnousite on his way to carding a triple bogey seven in one of the most iconic moments in Open Championship history.

With the 52-year-old set for his second full season on the over-50s circuit, van de Velde is looking forward to the challenge on the links layout.

“I am delighted to be taking part in the tournament,” he said. “Links golf always provides a great test for golfers of all standards and I have heard great things about Trevose. This will be a fantastic addition to the Staysure Tour schedule.”

The Farmfoods European Legends links Championship is organised by brand agency Champions (UK) plc and their Director of Sport Tim Munton said: “Jean is one of the most recognisable faces in European golf and we are delighted that he will be competing in this year’s Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship. He played a huge role in one of the most exciting Open Championships in recent history and 20 years on we are looking forward to seeing him face off with Paul Lawrie once again.”

Head of the Staysure Tour David MacLaren said: “Jean is a huge name in international golf and in particular for his contribution to the profile of golf in France. He has played at the highest level of the game and his European Tour record speaks for itself. We can’t wait to see him in action at Trevose.”
