It’s child’s play for Levet in India

Former Ryder Cup player Thomas Levet passed on some pearls of wisdom to around 15 local youngsters at a Golf Foundation Clinic on Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after signing for a level par round of 72 on the opening day of the Avantha Masters, the Frenchman made his way to the driving range at Jaypee Greens Golf & Spa Resort to educate the budding young golfers, aged from six to 15 and drawn predominantly from the Indian capital Delhi and the surrounding area.

Amongst the group was seven year old Shubham Jaglan, the son of a milkman who learnt to play golf through watching clips on the internet.

Over the past two years, he has won more than 60 junior tournaments, most recently with an aggregate score of nine under par.

Levet, a winner of six European Tour titles, said: “Some of these youngsters have a lot of potential, and they seemed so keen. Many of them have got the basics right, which is a very good sign. I was impressed, hopefully they will keep going in the game and maybe even have a future career in golf.”

Earlier in the day, leading Indian players Gaurav Ghei and Anirban Lahiri, both three-times winners on the Asian Tour, conducted the Emirates Clinic, attended by nearly 30 children from the National Capital region, many of whom train at the Jaypee Greens Golf & Spa Resort.

Ghei said: “It’s amazing to see how keen these youngsters are. Some of them are really very good for their age, and they could have a very bright future in the game.”

Lahiri, winner of last week’s SAIL-SBI Open on the Asian Tour, added: “These kids have a lot of opportunities, and they are willing to work at their game. I’m sure some of the kids we saw today will be the champions of the future.”

The Golf Foundation is a Registered Charitable Society formed in 1995 by like-minded golfers, who wanted to give back to the game. Its vision is to support and nurture young, talented golfers as they strive to reach the upper echelons of the game.
