INFINITUM provided the backdrop for six rounds of drama at Final Stage DP World Tour Qualifying School this week, where 33 players secured one of the coveted DP World Tour cards on offer.
The Costa Dorada layout was hosting Final Stage for a fifth time having done so from 2017-2019 and then again in 2022, with 156 players teeing it up across both The Lakes and The Hills courses on the opening four days, before the four-round cut saw 78 players vying for a spot on Golf’s Global Tour on The Lakes.
Following 108 holes, the marathon week saw German Freddy Schott prevail with a six-round score of 27 under par having carded rounds of 68-63-75-66-64-65 as he led 33 players to the DP World Tour.
The challenge of INFINITUM, formally known as Lumine Golf, was seen on the opening two days, with The Lakes and The Hills providing two very different propositions. While The Lakes Course surrounds the lakes and the Sèquia Major wetlands - one of the most important ecosystems in the region - The Hills Course is played between natural pine trees and cliffs, with panoramic sea views.
The different layouts, and the intensity of the six-round week, tests players’ abilities like very few other weeks in golf. On the opening two days the wind swirled, with day one leader, Jeppe Kristian Andersen summing up the challenging nature of the two courses after carding a seven under par round of 64 on The Lakes Course.
"I had to trust the conditions today because the fairways were quite wide but it is still scary to start the ball over the water and rely on the wind to bring it back into play.
“The Hills Course will be tighter tomorrow so I will use more irons off the tee to keep the ball in the fairway. I will adopt a similar game plan, but I will need to adjust my ball flight to be slightly lower due to the altitude change up in the hills.”
There is an importance placed on sustainability too, which is site-wide at INFINITUM. For example, the Lakes golf course is located within a protected natural area, and to preserve it, the resort controls the use of phytosanitary products on its golf courses. Using recycled water from the desalination plant reduces the resort’s water consumption and contributes to environmental conservation.
INFINITUM has grand plans for the future too, with renovations, hotel plans and a 20-year vision aiming to bolster the already impressive setup.
