In-form Bjerregaard delighted to be defending

Lucas Bjerregaard will be hopeful that a perfect storm can bring him European Tour win number two when he defends the title at this week's Portugal Masters.

The Dane has an excellent record at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, finishing 47th at the weather-shortened 2014 edition in his rookie year before two top-15 finishes in 2015 and 2016.

His victory last season came after he followed a top ten at the Omega European Masters with a week off and he has taken the same approach this term after losing out in a play-off to Matthew Fitzpatrick in Switzerland.

That result made it three top tens in a row and with fine form and familiar surroundings on his side, Bjerregaard looks to the in the perfect position to challenge in Vilamoura.

“I’ve played well recently,” he said. “The game is feeling good and I’ve just had a nice week resting at home to get ready for the end of the year."

This year's visit to Portugal will be a little different as it will be Bjerregaard's first as a father, with his girlfriend pregnant when he lifted the trophy 12 months ago.

The beautiful Algarve makes the Portugal Masters one of the most popular events for players to bring their families with them, and Bjerregaard is looking to make the most of it both on and off the course.

“I have fond memories and not just of last year,” he added. “I’ve always loved coming here, the same with my family. My girlfriend has been here every year that I’ve been on Tour. We enjoy coming here and it’s no different this year.

"I’m really happy to be here, I’ve got the little one with me. My girlfriend was 30 weeks pregnant the last time we were here so it’s fun to bring the little one with us this time.

“It’s really nice here and I look forward to the week. It’s a great resort and everyone seems to bring their families here. It’s good fun.”
