Ilonen closing in on Siem

Mikko Ilonen overcame a bout of food poisoning to close to within a single shot of Marcel Siem as the final round of the Trophée Hassan II began at Golf du Palais Royal.

German Siem had begun the day four clear as he chases a last-gasp Masters Tournament ticket; the 32 year old needing to win to stand a chance of sneaking into the Official World Golf Ranking’s top 50 in the nick of time.

Ilonen had felt unwell overnight, but that didn’t stop him hitting his tee shot to the short second to within a foot for a tap-in birdie and sinking a 30 footer at the next to reach 13 under.

That was only one behind Siem, who missed the green at the second and duffed his chip en route to a bogey.

Spain’s Pablo Larrazábal and England’s 2011 winner David Horsey were a further two shots back on 11 under in Agadir.

Ilonen completed a hat-trick of birdies from five feet at the fourth, claiming a share of the lead in the process.
