Iceland make strong start to mixed event

Iceland were the early leaders as the innovative Mixed Team event at the European Golf Team Championships got under way on Saturday afternoon.

The format for this revolutionary one-day competition is foursomes stroke play, with two mixed pairs representing the same team at Gleneagles.

Their 18-hole totals are added together and the team with the lowest score will win gold, with silver and bronze medals on offer for those who finish second and third.

Valdis Thora Jonsdottir and Birgir Hafthorsson - the first Icelandic duo out on course on Saturday - got off to a strong start, with Jonsdottir knocking in her 12-foot birdie putt at the first to propel her country to the top of the leaderboard.

An opening bogey from Axel Boasson and Olafia Kristinsdottir in Iceland's other pairing dropped Iceland back to level par but they made amends with a bounce-back birdie at the long second.

Jonsdottir and Hafthorsson carded back-to-back bogeys at the sixth and seventh but their team-mates found birdies at the third and fourth to take the team back to one under.

Hafthorsson then made a birdie at the eighth before Kristinsdottir reeled off her pairing's fourth birdie in a row at the fifth to move Iceland on to three under par.

Sweden 1 were Iceland's nearest challengers on level par.
