Brian Huggett’s contribution to Welsh golf and The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex was recognised at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in a special presentation on the eve of the country’s first Senior Major.
Huggett, who won The Senior Open Championship in 1998, helped bring the prestigious championship to Wales for the first time, working together with the Welsh government and Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, where he is an Honorary Member.
In recognition of that role, and also the contribution he made in Wales’ first Ryder Cup four years ago, Huggett was presented with a Rolex by George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, and Jean-Noel Bioul, Rolex’s Senior Advisor.
The six-time Ryder Cup player and 1977 Ryder Cup captain, said: “This is very special for me. To be honoured here at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, which means so much to me, is wonderful.
“Royal Porthcawl looks very beautiful at the moment, there’s no doubt about it, and this place is a bit special. When you see it like this today, this is just the best place for shoreline golf, and that’s what we are talking about here, with rocks being right up by the fairway.
“This is a fantastic venue because there’s no other course that can match the shoreline golf Porthcawl produces.”
In making the presentation, O’Grady said: “Brian has been such a big exponent of pushing Wales forward, both prior to The Ryder Cup and now building up to The Senior Open Championship. We felt, together with our partners in Rolex, who like to crown every achievement, and with whom we have such a strong relationship, that we would like to offer him this gift on behalf of this Championship’s committee, Rolex and The European Tour to recognise this contribution.”
The presentation was made in front of representatives from The R&A, members of Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and the media.
