Host Westwood bidding for British Masters glory

Lee Westwood believes his next victory could be just around the corner and would love it to come at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports.

The 23-time European Tour winner, who is hosting this week's event at Close House Golf Club in the north of England, has recorded two top-ten finishes in his last three events and feels his return to the winner's circle is not far away.

The 44 year old said: "I've started hitting the ball really well.

"I finished (joint) ninth in the Czech Republic and played okay in Switzerland. I played well two weeks ago in Holland and finished (tied) third. My game is definitely trending in the right direction.

"I feel like maybe a win is just around the corner.

"It would be great if it was here this week but obviously, you know, whenever it comes, it will be fantastic."

Westwood, who has been attached to Close House since 2011, will tee it up alongside last year's winner Alex Noren and current Masters Tournament champion Sergio Garcia, who are just some of the star names in a world-class field this week.

Major Champions Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell and Danny Willett are also in Northumberland for the tournament and Westwood is delighted to have assembled such a strong group of players.

"It means a lot," he said. "I don't know whether it's me - the reason why the players have turned out, but if it is, then that's fantastic.

"It's very nice for me. You know, Sergio doesn't play in Britain very often.

"All of the great players that have turned out - the likes of José María Olazábal and Miguel Ángel Jiménez and the good players currently like Rory and Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter playing is obviously great for the tournament. It should create a great atmosphere.

"It's one of the strongest fields we've had all year on Tour I think."

Former World Number One Westwood, who follows Ian Poulter and Luke Donald in the role of tournament host, is looking forward to getting started after spending a lot of time planning and promoting the event.

He added: "I'm delighted the week has finally arrived.

"It's been a fairly long road, you know, trying to get everything together and having first discussions over a year-and-a-half ago.

"And I suppose I knew I was going to be the host of it three years ago. So a lot of thought and planning has gone into it.

"Obviously I've been involved more than I would normally at a tournament and it's given me a great appreciation of what goes into it."
