Horsey off to brilliant start in Denmark

David Horsey equalled the lowest nine holes on The European Tour this year as he got off to a flying start at the Made in Denmark on Thursday.

Dave Horsey - on his way to a fine opening round 63 at the Made in Denmark

The Englishman, starting on the tenth, eagled the 11th and then recorded a run of five birdies from the 13th to reach the turn in 28 and match Justin Walters' score in the second round of the Joburg Open in February.

A further birdie followed on the par three second to move Horsey to eight under and needing to pick up four shots over his last six holes to record the first 59 in European Tour history.

The three-time European Tour winner parred the fourth but his dreams of an historic low looked to be thwarted as he dropped a shot on the fifth.

The par five sixth presented an opportunity to pick up shots at 471 yards and Horsey found the green in two but his long eagle putt did not break enough to the right and he had to settle for birdie with a par following on the seventh.

Paul Lawire also had a look at eagle on the sixth despite sending his tee shot left but made birdie to sit on five under, three behind Horsey through 15 holes.

The conditions were perfect for low scoring at Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort and Spaniard Carlos Del Moral had five birdies through 13 holes to sit alongside Lawrie.

Danish flags had been handed out at the par three 16th to celebrate Søren Kjeldesn reaching 500 European Tour appearances last week and the home favourite did not disappoint as he put his tee shot to within two feet and rolled in a birdie to complete his opening nine in 34.

Further birdies followed on the second and third and, following some good fortune after sending his second shot right and hitting a spectator's bag, Kjeldsen picked up another shot on the fifth.

Another birdie followed on the sixth after an eagle putt was left agonisingly short and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open champion had four birdies in five holes and was five under.

A minute's silence was held on course at 1200 to honour caddie Brian McFeat who sadly passed away recently.
