Horsey canters ahead

David Horsey moved clear in front in the final round of the M2M Russian Open at Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club.

Horsey, twice a winner on the European Tour, immediately responded to bogeys on the fifth and sixth with two straight birdies on another beautifully sunny day.

The Englishman was tied for the overnight lead with Peter Whiteford on 13 under par but briefly led early in his last round when the Scot, seeking a first European Tour victory after a couple of runner-up finishes, bogeyed the par four second hole when a long putt for par narrowly missed on the right of the hole.

Horsey dropped a shot at the par four fifth with a similar miss from shorter range to slip back to 12 under alongside Whiteford.

At the next hole, a par three, both carded a bogey. However, Horsey then made gains with a three thanks to a superb long putt and a four, aided by a good chip from a bunker, followed by a par to sit 13 under at the turn.

Whiteford, on 11 under, was two shots back and one ahead of Ireland’s Damien McGrane and Scott Jamieson of Scotland.
