Hole-in-one voodoo strikes again

The eighth hole at Golf Club Klagenfurt-Seltenheim must be one of the luckiest golf holes in the world.

Alex Chopard

For the third year running, a player has aced it in the Kärnten Golf Open presented by Mazda, this time Alexandre Chopard sinking a 9-iron straight from the tee.

And if that was not freaky enough, Klass Eriksson then did exactly the same in the afternoon.

Last year Martin Wiegele aced the 160-yard par three in the final round, which ultimately helped him to a one-shot victory. By a remarkable coincidence, Wiegele also had a hole-in-one there on the last day the year before, contributing to a six under par 66 which gave him a share of sixth place. The pins were even in exactly the same position, and he used the same club.

Wiegele, who is not able to go for a hat-trick of hole-in-ones as he is playing in the Saab Wales Open on The European Tour this week, called it his “favourite hole in the world”.

The tournament is closing in on the record of four consecutive years of hole-in-ones, held by the 12th hole at Houghton Golf Club, which had aces in the Alfred Dunhill Championship every year from 1999 to 2002.

So if you’re a golfer who has played for many years without ever having a hole-in-one, get down to Golf Club Klagenfurt-Seltenheim in southern Austria and try your luck on the eighth!
