Hoffman keeps his nose in front

Charley Hoffman maintained his two-shot lead as he turned in 34 during the third round of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National.

The American had opened with a brilliant 65 but was reined in by the field on Friday before three birdies on the front nine moved him to six under and back ahead of the pack.

Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler turned in level par to be his nearest challengers alongside 2015 champion Jordan Spieth, who had picked up four shots coming out of Amen Corner.

Thomas Pieters and Jon Rahm were then three shots off the lead.

Fowler made the first move as he took advantage of the par five second, with Pieters producing a wonderful pitch to also make a gain and pick up the shot he had dropped on the first.

A poor chip on the third from Fowler dropped him back into the pack and after a smart par save on the first, Hoffman made a nice bunker save to birdie the second and hit the front.

He then put his tee-shot on the par three fourth to nine feet and he was two ahead, with Garcia making four pars after missing a putt from similar range.

The Omega Dubai Desert Classic champion recovered from a poor tee-shot on the fifth to make a birdie with a stunning putt and, with Hoffman dropping a shot on the sixth, he was in a share of the lead.

Another poor tee-shot on the seventh led to a dropped shot but Garcia picked it straight back up on the next.

Fowler also bogeyed the seventh and birdied the eighth while Spieth made his move from the sixth.

He holed a 41-footer on the sixth, played a wonderful second to the eighth and put his approach to tap-in range on the ninth. Another excellent second into the 13th then set up another birdie and he was right in the hunt.

Hoffman then produced a similar approach to Spieth on the ninth to extend his lead.

Rahm made birdies on the second and third to thrust himself into contention but bogeyed the fourth before picking the shot back up on the 11th.

Justin Rose was then at two under with William McGirt, Ryan Moore and Adam Scott.

World Number Two Rory McIlroy was level par.
