Hoey cruises into quarter finals

Michael Hoey sailed into the quarter finals of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play on Saturday morning.

The Northern Irishman fired six birdies on his way to a 7 and 6 win against Grégory Havret and he will face Kiradech Aphibarnrat in the last eight after the 26 year old beat Thomas Aiken 4 and 3.

Hoey, who was six up at the turn after covering the front nine in 31, was happy with his performance.

"I didn't expect that," he said. "But I had six birdies, and it was good golf.

"The conditions suit me. I am remembering some shots from a long time ago when I won the British Amateur (in 2001) and I am trying to get used to playing little low, controlled shots in the wind.

"It feels like you are leading the tournament when you are ahead and you are just trying to keep the pressure on.

"I got off to a good start the last three matches. The start is important, trying to get up early and keep the pressure on. It is a mental thing but it is enjoyable."

Former Ryder Cup player David Howell is also through after beating Scotland's Chris Doak 2 and 1, while Sweden's Robert Karlsson booked his place in the next round with a 4 and 3 win against countryman Johan Carlsson.

Howell will take on fellow Englishman Chris Wood on Saturday afternoon after he beat France's Julien Quesne by two holes.

Wood, who enjoyed back to back 5 and 4 wins on Thursday and Friday, was four up with five to play, but saw his lead cut to one after losing three holes on the spin before halving the 17th and winning the 18th to progress.

Home favourite Richie Ramsay is also through after beating Morten Ørum Madsen by one hole in the closest game of the round.

The match was all square heading into the 18th, and after Madsen had narrowly missed his long range birdie putt at the last, Ramsay rolled in from ten feet to set up a quarter final clash with Karlsson.

Tyrrell Hatton continued to impress at Murcar Links, beating Peter Uihlein 5 and 4 to book a last eight meeting with Scot Marc Warren, who saw off Nicolas Colsaerts.

Hatton was pleased to be in the last eight. He said: "I am obviously really happy to get it done fairly early.

"It was always going to be a tough match against Pete today.

"I am just happy to get through to the next round."
