The oldest golf club outside of Great Britain, Royal Calcutta Golf Club in India, will make its debut appearance on the Challenge Tour schedule this year.
The Kolkata Challenge will take place from March 21-24 as the sixth of 29 events on the 2024 Road to Mallorca season, with the history-rich golf club hosting the second of back-to-back events in India.
Founded in 1829, Royal Calcutta is older than any other club in the world outside of the British Isles and was bestowed its Royal title 81 years after its inception after King George V & Queen Mary’s visit in 1911. Memorabilia dating back to when it was founded is still preserved in the clubhouse.
The West Bengal club was initially situated where the city’s international airport now stands, but after several moves found its current home in the city’s southern suburbs in Tollygunqe at the end of the 19th Century.
Steeped in history off the course, on the course the challenge comes in the shape of strategically placed water tanks, natural water hazards and tree-lined fairways.
At 7237 yards in length, the par 72 course will provide a stern test for those teeing it up in March.
