There was a strong home presence at the top end of the leaderboard, while a former champion came close to an amazing ace on day one of the 2023 Hero Indian Open.

Paul bounces back

Yannik Paul opened his round with a bogey at the first but recovered brilliantly, getting the shot straight back on the second before making seven birdies in ten holes from the ninth to lead by one.

Knappe's front-nine fireworks

After carding one birdie and one bogey in his first six holes on Thursday, Alexander Knappe caught fire just before the turn as he reeled off three successive birdies at the seventh, eighth and ninth. He completed the hat-trick with this six-foot putt on the ninth before giving shots back near the end of his round.

Olesen's outstanding up-and-down

The par-five fourth hole turned out to be a bit of a roller-coaster ride for last week's winner Thorbjørn Olesen but he walked away from there with a spring in his step after this remarkable up-and-down from the rough around the green.

Baisoya's birdie blitz

Home hope Honey Baisoya is making just his seventh DP World Tour start this week but fired a nerveless 66 on the opening morning to set the early clubhouse target. The 26-year-old made six birdies in seven holes from the fourth before mixing two more birdies with a double bogey in the last six holes. He sits second, one behind leader Paul.

Former winner Gallacher goes close to ace
