Herbert: Home victory would be 'huge'

Lucas Herbert is dreaming of winning his maiden title on home soil as he prepares to tee it up at this week's Australian PGA Championship.

The 22 year old Australian enjoyed a stellar 2018 season on the European Tour, recording seven top-ten finishes despite having to rely on tournament invites.

A series of strong performances saw him finish 47th in the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex and secure his card for the 2019 campaign.

Herbert is now targeting a first victory and would love to make the breakthrough at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast this week.

He said: "I haven't won an event yet, so definitely to win one is going to be really special.

"And the fact that it would be here in Australia, the Australian PGA, it would be huge.

"I was just reading Greg Norman's book over the last few weeks and he said he always wanted to come back to Australia and be seen as a winner in Australia.

"So I thought, you know, that resonated with me a lot. I would love to come back here and win our events if I'm going to have the career that I hope to have.

"Yeah, to kick it off here on the Gold Coast would be great."

Fellow Australian Marc Leishman is also hoping to win the Kirkwood Cup this weekend.

The World Number 21 arrives on the Gold Coast fresh from finishing second alongside Cameron Smith at last week's ISPS Handa Melbourne World Cup of Golf.

And he has a clear goal in mind this week.

He said: "I'm excited to be back. Obviously I've got a purpose to be here, I want to try and win this event.

"I haven't managed to win one of the three big Australian events yet, so that's very high on the list, probably a missing part of my resume.

"I'm happy to be here and hoping I can have a big week.

"Every tournament I go to I want to obviously do as well as I can, try and win the event.

"That's no different whether I'm an underdog or on the posters all around town.

"As far as pressure, I don't know if I feel pressure to win but I'm definitely, I'll say, a lot more determined to do the right things and try and give myself the best chance to contend when I'm at home."
