Marcus Helligkilde narrowly missed out on his third triumph of the year on the Road to Mallorca but his second place finish at the Challenge Costa Brava increased his chances of becoming the third Dane to top the Rankings.
The 25-year-old finished one stroke behind New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier, who picked up his maiden European Challenge Tour title at Emporda Golf, but breezed past France’s Julien Brun into third place on the Rankings, just 19,000 points behind leader Santiago Tarrio.
Tarrio has led the way on the Road to Mallorca Rankings since his second victory of the year at the Challenge de España, and he cemented his position at the summit with four top fives in his six Challenge Tour starts following his triumph at Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri.
The man separating Tarrio and Helligkilde is Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia, who heads into next week’s Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A just over 7,000 points behind Spaniard Tarrio.
While the men at the top will be challenging to be crowned Road to Mallorca Number One, there is an equally captivating fight for the players looking to secure their playing privileges on the European Tour for 2022.
Just 25,000 points separates Germany’s Hurly Long, who sits 15th on the Rankings, and France’s Ugo Coussaud, who occupies 30th position, which means there are so many outcomes which could come to fruition at T Golf & Country Club in the season finale.
The Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final boasts the biggest prize fund on the 2021 Road to Mallorca, meaning each one of the 45 players teeing it up on the Balearic Island can mathematically earn one of the 20 European Tour cards on offer.
