Heath downs Colsaerts to advance

James Heath continued his fine form at the Belgian Knockout to advance to the semi-finals and end the hopes of home favourite Nicolas Colsaerts.

The Englishman had made just one cut all season when he arrived at Rinkven International Golf Club but after finishing second over the 36 holes of stroke play on days one and two, he continued to impress in the knockout stage.

The players were facing each other over nine holes of stroke play and after claiming three wins on Saturday, including a stunning fightback against Scott Fernandez and a play-off victory over Robert Karlsson, Heath played his nine quarter-final holes in three under to beat Colsaerts by one shot.

He will next face Benjamin Hebert, who was one under in beating fellow Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera by a single stroke.

Adrian Otaegui beat Jorge Campillo by two shots in an all-Spanish affair and will take on David Drysdale in the semi-finals after the Scot beat Frenchman Victor Perez in a play-off.

Both players in the top match birdied the third and Heath made it back-to-back gains before a Colsaerts bogey on the fifth put him two ahead. The two-time Qualifying School graduate then bogeyed the sixth before both men took advantage of the short seventh.

Another Heath birdie on the par five eighth gave him a two-shot cushion heading up the last but when he put his tee-shot into the trees off the ninth tee, the home fans had hope for their hero.

A second shot into the bunker appeared to increase Colsaerts' chances of winning his third European Tour title six years to the day that he claimed his last, but Heath got up and down brilliantly, meaning Colsaerts' 35-foot putt for birdie was a mere consolation.

Lorenzo-Vera has been in fine form, having lost a play-off at last week's Rocco Forte Sicilian Open, but a level par total on Sunday was not enough to keep Hebert at bay.

Hebert went bogey-birdie from the first and a Lorenzo-Vera bogey on the fifth edged him ahead, a lead kept intact when both players birdied the seventh and parred their way home.

Campillo had been the top seed after days one and two but Otaegui - who won his first European Tour title in knockout play at last season's Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play - played his nine holes in one under to end his run.

Otaegui bogeyed the second to give Campiilo the lead but the match turned on its head when Campillo bogeyed the fourth and Otaegui birdied the fifth. Another Campillo bogey on the sixth extended the lead to two and an Otaegui birdie on the seventh meant he had edged forward on four consecutive holes.

A Campillo birdie on the eighth gave him some hope but both players parred the last and Otaegui advanced.

Drysdale has been an ever-present on the European Tour since graduating from the Qualifying School for the third consecutive season in 2008 but is still searching for that first win and had missed his last six cuts.

The bottom match was a scrappy affair, with bogeys from Drysdale on the first, fourth and fifth, and Perez on the first, second and fourth leaving both players three over.

Perez then claimed the only birdie of the regulation holes on the seventh but a bogey on the last sent the contest to a play-off.

Drysdale birdied the extra hole and with Perez making a bogey, it was the 43 year old who advanced.
