Tyrrell Hatton admitted it just wasn't his day after narrowly missing out on a first World Golf Championships title at the WGC – Mexico Championship.
The Englishman carded a closing 67 to finish one behind winner Phil Mickelson and Justin Thomas, with a bogey on the 18th scuppering his chances of making the play-off.
Hatton's approach to the par four finished in the rough before his putt for par – which would have taken him to extra holes – bobbled soon after leaving the blade before coming up short.
“We were trying to think, 148 meters, wrong club,” Hatton said of his approach to 18.
“So it's just disappointing. Need a shot in there to take the spin off and we hit a club that's pitching around the pin if I hit a really good one and it's just going to spin. So I'm absolutely raging with that.
“I'm pretty hacked off. We'll see, you never know when you're going to get the chance to win a WGC event again. This is the first chance I've had of winning.
“I can't believe that I'm not at least in the play-off, I've played good enough, thought I handled the situation pretty well. Guess it just wasn't meant to be.
“You don't get many opportunities to win WGC events and I feel like I've thrown a really good opportunity away. So I'm pretty upset, definitely angry. Don't know how else to sum up really. Just wasn't my day today.”
Hatton finished tied for third alongside Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello, who was pleased with his week's work following a closing 67.
“I felt I played good, I've been in contention,” he said. “I played good today as well. Maybe one or two mistakes, but I mean, I by no means feel that I lost anything.
“I've kind of always been in the hunt, a couple, one or two a few back from the leaders. Unfortunately, that's how it's going to finish. But overall pretty pleased. A very good performance.”
