Harrington starts well as Na races ahead

Padraig Harrington made a solid start to The Players Championship as American Kevin Na took an early lead at Sawgrass.

The 28 year old Na birdied six of his first eight holes, including the dangerous short 17th with its near island green, to lead golf's richest event by a shot from compatriot Blake Adams, who finished the front nine with five successive birdies.

Irishman Harrington and England's Ian Poulter, both former runners-up in the tournament, were one under par, as well as former winner Henrik Stenson and Argentina’s Angel Cabrera.

Harrington birdied the second and third, bogeyed the sixth and eighth after straying into the rough, but pitched to seven feet for another birdie at the long ninth.

Poulter was also off to a fast with birdies at the second and fourth, but missed the green at the seventh and dropped his first shot.

Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood were set to resume their battle for the World Number One spot in the afternoon session.

Poulter moved into a tie for third place with a hat-trick of birdies from the ninth.

He pitched to four feet there, made a six footer on the next and then splashed out of a bunker to four feet at the long 11th, while Harrington returned to two under with a 14 foot putt at the 13th.

Na double-bogeyed the first after pulling his drive into the trees, but birdied the next two to draw alongside surprise package Adams, who packed eight birdies and two bogeys into his first 15 holes.

Poulter made it four birdies in a row with an 18 footer at the 12th, and when he got up and down from a bunker on the long 16th he joined Adams - in with a 66 - out in front.

Harrington also birdied the 16th and two closing pars gave him a 69, while Woods was two over with three to play.
