American Gary Hallberg was among the 45 players to qualify for The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at three different courses in Wales on Monday.

Hallberg, who finished runner up to Fred Couples in The 2012 Senior Open Championship at Turnberry, posted a five under par 65 at Southerndown, finishing three shots clear of Scotland’s Alastair Webster, Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori and American Joe Daley, with 16 players in total securing their places in the field for the Championship at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.

At Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, Swedish pair Daniel Westermark and Klas Tenmark tied for the top spot after each carding one over par rounds of 72, finishing one shot clear of English quartet Mark Belsham, Stephen Bennett, Phil Gresswell and amateur Mike Reynard.

In total, 15 players progressed from Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, with Scottish amateur Nicky Gold, English pair John Ambridge & Robert Evans, and Welshman Thomas Lloyd coming through a play-off.

Finally, at Ashburnham Golf Club, Japan’s Hiroshi Ueda posted a three under par round of 69 to finish one stroke clear of American Jim Carter and Sweden’s Peter Mortimer. Ueda led the 14 players to qualify, with Americans Greg Bruckner and Gary Rusnack and English pair Graeme Bell and Mark Booth making it through a play-off.

The 45 qualifiers will join the exempt players in the field at Royal Porthcawl on Thursday, with Colin Montgomerie bidding for a third Senior Major Championship after previously winning the US Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid and the US Senior Open. Also featuring will be Bernhard Langer, Miguel Angel Jiménez, US Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson and home favourite Ian Woosnam.
